Image Processing using Atom board and ubuntu

I am trying to do gesture recognition using linux and usb camera on Atom board. I used jpeg for positive images however the detection was not that great and processing is very slow for real time detection. What image format should I use instead? Also how can I increase the processing speed? FPGA or add GPU? Please help!
