How to make an image update on screen if the filename does not change?

I have an image

<img src="whatever.jpg">

After I upload a different image to the file whatever.jpg with an xhr the image will not change on screen (since I have not reloaded)

I can confirm the image on the server (a local mamp server) is changed by navigating to it directly.

How to force my image to show the new file even if the filename does not change?
