Measure object's size using Camera in iPhone

I'm working on an iOS application that use the camera to estimate an object's size basing on a reference object (like a credit card), i've found some similar apps like On 3D Camera Measure. Does anyone knows how it work or the algorithm it use? any help will be appreciated.
