Creating js slideshow with timer/buttons

I have 5 thumbnail images with one large picture under them. I need to be able to click on each thumb turning them large into the large spot.

Also I need to have the thumbs in a slideshow on a 5 second timer with two buttons one that starts the slideshow and one that stops it.

I have no clue how to really begin this function.
