Total Variation Denoising ROF algorithm

I am trying to implement Algorithm 1 in Java taken from http://ift.tt/1D8ITN1 Algorithm 1 pg78, I am having trouble understanding what the ∇−x and ∇−y are in front of the brackets and how to derive them, any help would be greatly appreciated
